Mother’s Day Carnations FAQs

Why Are Carnations Used for Mother's Day?

We can thank Anna Jarvis for making carnations the go-to Mother's Day flower. Back in 1908, Jarvis spearheaded the first Mother's Day celebration in the United States. These lovely spring blooms were her mother's favorite, and now the rest is history. So, if you're buying Mother's Day flowers this year, remember that Mom and carnations go hand-in-hand.

What Do Carnation Flowers Mean?

Regarded as one of the oldest cultivated flowers, carnations have a rich and storied history. The ancient Greeks considered the carnation to be a "heavenly flower" and dubbed it the "flower of the Gods." While carnations are a popular Mother's Day flower, it's important to know the meaning behind each tender petal.

Sending white carnations for Mother's Day is a popular choice, but so is a mixed arrangement with multiple colors. You'll find exactly what you're looking for at Proflowers, where our delivery options include bouquets of Mother's Day tulips, daisies, mini roses, and other vibrant blooms.

Caring for Carnations

If you plan on sending a bouquet of carnations for Mother's Day, rest assured these are some of the easiest flowers to care for. Carnations are hardy and can last 2-3 weeks by following these tips.

  • Carnations love partial sun, so put your vase in a spot that gets a few hours of filtered light every day.

  • Remove any leaves on the stems so they are not submerged in water, as this can cause bacteria to grow and shorten their lifespan.

  • Do not put carnations in direct sunlight, as they will wilt more quickly.

  • Change the water in the vase every third day, and when doing so, cut the stems at an angle so they can absorb water/nutrients more readily

To further extend the lifespan of your carnations, you can add a few drops of ginger ale or a floral preservative packet. As always, Proflowers is the one-stop destination for sending carnations or Mother's Day plants online. Put a smile on her face with a floral bouquet or an eye-catching orchid that adds beauty to any environment.

History of Carnations

Carnations are a species of Dianthus caryophyllus that have been cultivated for thousands of years in Asia and Europe. There are more than 300 species, most of them perennials. They are native to the Mediterranean regions of Greece, Sicily, Spain, Albania, and Croatia.

These pretty flowers were first noted in Roman and Greek times as they were used to fashion ornate crowns and garlands. Today, carnations have evolved to be the official Mother's Day flower. Believe it or not, carnation petals are actually edible. When organically grown, the petals offer a peppery kick to salads and vegetarian dishes.
