No matter your age, we all get a little excited when it comes time to celebrate a birthday. However, when you’re in the throes of a romantic relationship, picking out the perfect birthday gift can be a little intimidating. One of the most common questions is: How much should I spend?
While we can’t put a price on love, we conducted a survey of 1,500 people over 18, and asked how much they spent on their last significant other’s birthday.
So what was the most common dollar amount people ended up spending?
Almost a quarter (22%) of people spent $100 or more on their partner’s last birthday present. While dropping a Benjamin on a birthday gift may seem a little high, it shows that many are eager to impress their loved one on their special day.
The survey also broke down the demographics of who was most likely to splurge on birthday gifts. As to be expected, the majority of this big spending comes from the boyfriends and husbands out there.
When shopping for their loved one’s birthday, men were more likely than women to spend $100 or more. Women, on the other hand, were more likely to stay within the $20 to $80 range.
In addition to gender, the bigger the paycheck, the bigger the gift. We found 80% of gift givers that spent $100 or more had an annual income of $100,000 or higher.
Interestingly, 40% of those making $49,000 or less annually still spent the same amount on their romantic partner. This shows that once a year, it’s worth spending a little extra for that special someone.
Last but not least, we uncovered whether age impacts birthday-gift spending amounts. Surprisingly, spending $100 or more on a birthday gift was the top choice across all ages.
Respondents ages 45 to 54 were the most likely to spend this amount, making up for more than a quarter of the results. Millennials (ages 18 to 24) were the least likely, but $100 or more still made out with the highest percentage in the age group.
