Single Valentine'sIf being single on Valentine’s Day has you feeling like the only one on New Year’s Eve with no one to kiss at midnight, it’s time to stop waiting around for Cupid and make your own fun. Don’t let all the romance-filled television ads and well-meaning family members convince you that you should be miserable just because you’re not part of a twosome.

The key to creating an amazing single Valentine’s Day comes down to perspective. First, as much as it may seem that way, you are not the only person in the world going solo on V-day. Instead of moping about, why not  take advantage of this excuse to shower someone you know with love. And who is that you ask? Why you, of course! Valentine’s is about showing the people in our lives how special we think they are. And that includes ourselves. So turn off the sappy movie, put down the ice cream, and start making some of your own Valentine’s Day plans. Here are a few ideas to get you started:

Give Yourself Permision to Indulge

Don’t let your lack of a sweetheart keep you from enjoying a boquet of your favorite flowers or some decadently rich candies. Go on, spoil yourself with a few of your prefered indulgences. But remember, Valentine’s Day is only one day so don’t overdo it. Lavish spa days are another – less caloric – way to show yourself a little TLC. After a relaxing day at the spa, you’ll have forgotten all about that pesky valentine business.

All the Single Ladies, and Gents

Who needs a date to have a good time on Valentine’s? Gather some of your other single friends and plan something. Ladies, enjoy some time with your besties at your preferred restaurant or café. Or, enjoy some quality time together and have a girls night in with wine, tapas and a favorite flick. Only rule is, no sappy romance movies. This isn’t about commiserating over what you’re missing. It’s about sharing a few laughs and fun times with friends. Guys, spend the day out on the golf course or take in a ballgame for a little male bonding.

Try Something New

If there’s something you’ve always wanted to try or learn, now is the time. From skydiving, cooking classes or volunteering with a local charity, whatever your dream challenge may be Valentine’s Day is the perfect occasion to give it a go. There are also a few added benefits to trying something you’ve never done before — like building confidence, picking up a new skill or giving back to the community. What better way to spend the holiday, right? Convincing a couple of friends to join you adds to the fun and makes for some great memories.

Work it out!

Remember, of all of the things that really matter, your health is a big one. Spend some time at the gym working out all of that Valentine’s Day stress. You’ll be surprised how much an hour of yoga or other type of exercise can improve your outlook and leave you feeling relaxed and refreshed. Even better, take your workout outside. Who doesn’t feel better after a quiet hike on a favorite trail, surround by the natural beauty of the outdoors? Perhaps a long run, a walk on the beach, or skating through a lush green park are more your style. How you do it is your choice, the important thing is to get out and get moving.

These are just a few of the nearly endless possibilities for treating yourself to a fantastic Valentine’s Day, regardless of whether you’re a party two or one.
